Dentures
Dentures are removable prostheses that replace lost teeth. They also help in restoring your bright smile. One can lose their teeth due to gum disease, injury or tooth decay. Utilizing dentures is beneficial to your appearance and health.
How Do Dentures Function?
Dentures help an individual with lost teeth to chew and speak fluently. When one loses their teeth, their facial muscles become flabby hence making them appear old. Dentures fill out the facial appearance. They closely resemble a person’s natural teeth, therefore, causing a more natural look.
What Are The Different Types Of Dentures?
- Conventional denture:
- Immediate denture:It is inserted immediately after a patient’s remaining teeth are removed. Once a patient visits us, we take impressions of the oral cavity and create models of their jaws and teeth. A dental lab then fabricates a denture that will fit the patient’s mouth when the teeth in the arch are actually extracted. When healing the patient may experience some loss of bone over time in the area of the extracted teeth, and the denture may need to be relined to fit the new shape of the jaw and ridge if they have shrunk in size.
- Overdenture:It fits over several natural teeth after a dentist prepares them with a special attachment. At times, saving these teeth may help preserve the ridge and the attachments firmly support the denture. Alternatively, dental implants may be used to support a denture.
You might feel uncomfortable before you get accustomed to new dentures. At first, your cheek muscles might be unable to hold them properly. One may also experience slight irritation and soreness. However, if any of these problems arise, visit the dentist who supplied the denture and he can adjust them as necessary.
How To Maintain New Dentures?
Follow these tips to extend your denture’s function and longevity.
- Rinse them with warm water before brushing. It aids in removing debris.
- Gently brush them with a non-abrasive cleanser and a natural bristle brush to clean the surfaces of the denture inside and out.
- Thoroughly clean your mouth with a tooth brush. Remove loose food particles from your cheeks, gums, tongue and palate. It minimizes the occurrence of foul breath and oral irritation.
- When you are not wearing your dentures, store them in a safe place. Cover them with water to prevent them from drying out.
Sometimes you may have to use adhesives such as creams, liquids, pads or powders to help your dentures fit better and tighter. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid any problems. Only purchase adhesives and cleansers with an ADA Seal of Acceptance. If sealers and adhesives are not working as well as they should, you should consider having your denture relined. If your dentures are too loose, this can cause unnecessary bone loss on the remaining ridges.
